@Paul It's not that you need lots of people, especially at the start, but when people are working in a steady job and don't want to move, especially to a startup which may not last, it can be hard to find those few people.

Distributed teams definitely work (just look at GitHub for example) but they bring their own set of challenges, especially if you start hiring outside of Ireland

@Paul Watson - Agreed. It's a great time to be able to make your mark on the world in a startup. It's still an issue that people can't hire because (in my experience) the best folk are in the Big 2 or else in startups, where they're happy.

It's also a golden time to be in startups, to make your mark on the world that you would not be able to from within a big, established company.

We have to hire in, from Canada and Europe and further afield. There are moves afoot in the government to make this even easier.

I guess it's a fair point, but not every start up needs to hire lots of people to maintain systems. The Instagram lads were only 6 people. So if you have a small core of competent people then the hiring should already be done.

If you have a tech start up you don't all need to be physically in the same location either. So a distributed team will work.

That being said, I don't know (m)any unemployed programmers ;)

[...] In 2011 I started using the fantastic Weightbot app by Tapbots to record my weight. Generally I try to record at least 3 weights each week, with at least one at the weekend. During the year I picked up, and am still going through, Tim Ferris’ book the Four Hour Body on this recommendation. [...]

I agree in general. Still though, it's not always appropriate. I've built systems for selling hotel rooms. Certainly if I ever find myself with a stock of hotel rooms to sell, I'll use the latest of those, but it's not likely to come up soon.
Eating your own dog-food is all well and good, but sometimes your just not the right dog.

It certainly helps for someone who knows what they want to achieve to be developing the system.

As someone said over on Reddit (Hi guys!) said, there may be an issue with the UI of a Operations developed system lacking and while that may be an issue for a lot of folk, I know probably as many who will take the time and learn good (or at least usable) UI skills.

In the company I work for we have quite a few problems with programs built and maintained by outside departments. It comes back to them not understanding the user requirements. Recently a colleague in my dept has written some applications for us. Whilst they may be very simple looks-wise, they are functional and actually built to the user requirements. It's such a big difference!

Oh yeah. Any lean meat or fish is perfectly fine. I'm just a fan of chicken. The only weird thing is that you're not allowed fruit because of the high levels of fructose.

Na, the 5-6 meals are ones you prepare over the course of a week. You eat your normal 3 times a day.

I meant more the variance of different things you can and can't eat. Like fish, different types of meat, different veg. etc.

"5-6 simple but tasty high protein, low carbs meals " in a day ! ? I don't think I would have the time either.

Coffee is allowed (I think) because of the caffeine in it which helps increase your metabolism but it's all about moderation. You need to drink 2+litres of water a day too but that's just normal amounts to keep your hydrated anyway.

He actually recommends you don't exercise on this diet which sounds ridiculous but he has an interesting view point on it. Having a high protein diet will result in natural muscle growth anyway but by going to the gym, people move into a mindset of having done something good and will reward themselves will junk food instead of a healthy meal.

When you say lack of foods, do you mean my daily diet or the foods that you're not allowed? The book suggests having 5-6 simple but tasty high protein, low carbs meals so that you can make them quickly. I'm just too lazy to have 5 or 6.

It's only 1 day a week that you're allowed cheat but if you go out on a Saturday and drink 10 pints, you won't want to look at beer again for the rest of the week so you won't crave it, you won't drink it and you won't store the carbs from it :)
